ArtCyclopedia in an interesting website; it is more like a search engine, trawling the web for artist’s information and resources.

On the site there are

  • 9,000 artists listed
  • 2,900 art sites indexed
  • 160,000 links

So, as you can see, there is plenty to choose from.

As you arrive on the site, there is a search box where you can enter: the artist, the title of an image, or the name of an art gallery or museum.

An ideal starting point is to find works by artists you are studying:

Mondrian, for example, gives you links to many of his pictures where they are in art galleries, listings with images such as this well-known image:

Also see Kandinsky / Picasso as good examples. There is an alphabetical list to find individual artists. Each one has  the type of artist and date in the listing – then the briefest of biographical details on the actual page:

In ArtCyclopedia, you can also browse by  “movement” for example: Pop Art, ImpressionismArt Nouveau, and Cubism – to name but a few!

The site gives a brief introduction to a style, puts it into artistic historical perspective and lists the key artists. It is a really useful, simple background to studying any period:

For the Impressionist Period:

“Impressionism is a light, spontaneous manner of painting which began in France as a reaction against the restrictions and conventions of the dominant Academic art. Its naturalistic and down-to-earth treatment of its subject matter, most commonly landscapes, has its roots in the French Realism of Camille Corot and others.

The movement’s name was derived from Monet’s early work, Impression: Sunrise, which was singled out for criticism by Louis Leroy upon its exhibition.

The site then goes on to list the artists covered by the period.

This is a really useful and interesting site which would help teachers to set the scene for any artwork study, without getting too in depth with the information.
