All About Explorers

Posted by:

All about explorers titleAll About Explorers is a web site developed to teach pupils the need to verify the information that they find on the web. This site was developed by a group of teachers.

It is free to register and includes downloadable lesson plans.  The site claims to be “Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about every explorer who ever lived and more”  but it is almost all fiction.

After reading the information given it guides pupils to good information through the links where more information can be found.  The external links are to sound information, pupils have to work out which is truth and which is false and begin to realise that not everything that can be found on a web site is the truth.

For example the Christopher Columbus page starts with:

“Christopher Columbus was born in 1951 in Sydney, Australia. His home was on the sea and Christopher longed to become an explorer and sailor. However, as a young man, Christopher went to Portugal and got involved in the map making business with his brother, Bartholomew. This business made Columbus a rich man. His books of maps are still found today in every library in the world.”

This would be a really useful site for KS2 pupils if used as part of an e-safety programme.
